Learn how to stand up paddle and have SUP lessons and tours at Ocean Vertical, an ASI accredited SUP school, based at Dunbar East Lothian Scotland, only 25 miles east of Edinburgh.
Ocean Vertical specialise in outdoor wilderness experiences from the water to the mountains, in scenic locations, with nature all around.
Meet the Team
Ocean Vertical is owned and operated by Stevie Boyle. He is an accomplished waterman and outdoor activity instructor.
Stevie started exploring, climbing, swimming, surfing and mountaineering as a child and has never stopped. He has extensive mountain and water based experience and qualifications, including over 20 years working in adventure education centres.
He got involved in SUP in its early days and he is often exploring the inland lochs of Scotland and the Scottish coastline.
Stevie holds ASI SUP Instructor qualifications for enclosed inland waters, exposed coast waters and SUP surfing and the higher level ASI SUP Technical Coach. In addition some of his other qualifications include Coasteering Guide and Trainer, Mountaineering Winter Leader and Climber and Rock, First Aid trainer and holds a Level 3 In Education and Training. Stevie is also qualified to train others to be ASI SUP Instructors.
Ocean Vertical was founded to inspire a love for adventure and protect wild places through educational, nature-based experiences. Their goal is to foster deep respect for the environment and promote silent, human-powered sports that connect people meaningfully with the natural world.
Stevie is assisted in the SUP school with experienced ASI accredited SUP instructors, with extensive local knowledge.
Services Overview
Ocean Vertical offers group and private lessons, SUP Wise certificate courses, SUP tours, team building and rentals for kids, adults, parties, hens and stag parties, school groups, and corporates.
SUP Wise certificate courses offer 3 to 5 sessions to help you gain the confidence, safety knowledge and techniques to be paddling with ease.
There is a range of water conditions so you can progress your skills to higher levels and improve your paddling techniques, if you choose to.
SUP tours and adventures are available at various locations along the coast and to inland loch locations and can be customised.
Join in school holiday camps, with fun packed activities for the kids.
Day retreats and overnight adventures are available for adults that include yoga and SUP.
Corporate groups can be accommodated with extraordinary adventures to bring your team together.
Ocean Vertical is also an ASI Instructor Training Centre ITC, where you can complete your ASI SUP Instructor Training and become an ASI SUP Instructor.
Mountaineering, coasteering and surfing activities are also on offer.
Location Features
SUP sessions are held at Dunbar at the coast in flat water conditions, or in the nearby harbour.
Other locations in East Lothian are also used depending on the weather conditions and your abilities.
SUP Tours take place along the coast and in the Lomond and Trossach national parks. You will explore beautiful scenic locations, see nature all around you as you paddle along and enjoy the experience of being in the great outdoors.
The paddling locations are stunning with castles, cliffs, inlets, beaches, islands, birds and marine life, all there to be explored.
Facilities
Ocean Vertical have their office at Hedderwick Hill Stables at Dunbar.
There’s changing rooms, showers, refreshments, training room and a lounge. It’s a great place to relax after paddling.
Free parking is on site.

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore. John Muir Country Park offers a mix of coastal habitats, woodlands, and wetlands, ideal for birdwatching and peaceful walks. The John Muir Way, a long-distance trail that begins in Dunbar, provides dramatic cliffside views and a deep connection to Scotland’s natural beauty.
Dunbar’s history is rich and visible. Dunbar Castle, now a dramatic ruin perched above the sea, played a key role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and once sheltered Mary, Queen of Scots. The John Muir Birthplace Museum offers insight into the life and legacy of the conservationist who helped shape the U.S. National Parks system.
East Links Family Park offers train safaris, go-karts, and a fortress-style play area. Dunbar Leisure Pool is a relaxing spot with wave machines and flumes.
