Why the Gold Coast Is Your Ideal Surf Holiday Destination with ASI Surf Schools & Coaches
Posted: 24 May 2026

With sunshine almost all year round, warm water and a coastline famous for world-class waves, the Gold Coast is one of Australia’s best places for a surf away holiday, to learn to surf, improve your skills or take your surfing to the next level.
Stretching approx. 40 kms from Coolangatta in the south through to The Spit Main Beach in the north, the region offers a huge variety of surf conditions.
There are sandy beach breaks with gentle rolling waves for beginners. For intermediates and progression, there are clean consistent breaks of 2- 6ft. And larger 4-6 ft surf for the more experienced surfer looking to perform radical manoeuvres. More critical larger waves on reef breaks, for the more advanced surfers.
You’ll also find a range of accommodation types and food restaurants for all budgets, wellness retreats, theme parks, nature centres and other tourism attractions, all within easy driving distance and an international airport making it easy to fly in from anywhere !
Best of all, wherever you’re staying, you’re never far from an ASI‑accredited surf school—offering lessons and private coaching for everyone from beginners to advanced surfers, including elite‑level technique refinement with ASI Level 4 Master Surfing Coaches.
When is the best time to surf on the Gold Coast?
The Gold Coast is a year-round surfing destination. Summer brings warm tropical weather, long beach days and plenty of holiday atmosphere. Autumn is often a favourite for surfers, with warm water, pleasant weather and consistent swell. Winter is generally sunny and dry, with cooler mornings and strong swell patterns that can produce some of the region’s best surf. Spring brings warmer days and lighter crowds, although conditions can be more variable.
For beginners, there are suitable learning waves throughout the year, especially when surfing with an experienced ASI school that can choose the best location for the day. For more advanced surfers, autumn and winter are often regarded as excellent seasons for quality waves, cleaner conditions and more powerful swells.
Where to stay, eat and explore
The Gold Coast has accommodation options for every budget and travel style. Choose from beachfront apartments in Coolangatta, Kirra, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, family-friendly resorts with pools and kids’ facilities, boutique hotels, holiday parks, backpacker hostels, cabins and luxury stays. For a quieter surf-focused trip, stay in Coolangatta, Kirra or Currumbin. For dining, nightlife and convenience, Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise are central and easy to explore. Main Beach offers a more relaxed base close to The Spit, Southport and marina precincts.
Food is a major part of the Gold Coast experience, and there is something for every appetite after a surf. Start the day with coffee, smoothies or acai bowls from beachside cafés, then refuel with fish and chips by the ocean, fresh seafood, burgers, tacos, pizza, sushi, Thai, Italian or modern Australian dining. The region is especially known for relaxed alfresco eating, surf club meals with ocean views, weekend markets, seafood restaurants and stylish brunch spots. Broadbeach is a dining hub, Burleigh is popular for trendy cafés and bars, Coolangatta and Kirra offer laid-back beachfront meals, and Main Beach is known for marina dining and restaurants along Tedder Avenue.
When you are not surfing, there is plenty to do. Visit Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, walk the oceanfront paths from Kirra to Coolangatta, explore Burleigh Head National Park, head inland to Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook or Lamington National Park, enjoy the theme parks, shop at Pacific Fair, or take in the views from SkyPoint Observation Deck. The Gold Coast is compact enough that you can surf in the morning, explore the hinterland in the afternoon and be back at the beach for sunset.

With over 30 years of coaching experience, Dave is known for his structured approach, video analysis and ability to help beginners catch waves quickly. He’s also coached various teams, including the Australian team for the ISA World Surfing Games and the Gold Coast junior team.
The school’s Rainbow Bay location is one of its biggest drawcards. Gentle waves close to shore make it ideal for learners, while the surrounding southern Gold Coast surf zone offers clear pathways for progression. With Snapper Rocks, Greenmount and Kirra nearby, this is a classic Gold Coast surf setting with cafés, parklands and coastal walks all close by.
Kirra Point Surf School – Kirra
Kirra Point Surf School operates at one of the world’s most famous surf locations. Owned by James Woods, an elite surfer and experienced coach, the school has a strong focus on ongoing development and progression.
Their Salty Groms and Salty Kooks programs are designed for regular improvement, making the school a great fit for kids, teenagers and adults who want more than a one-off lesson. Surf Easy Surf School is based at Currumbin Alley and is owned and run by Patrick O’Leary and Ann Stuart. Patrick, an elite-advance surfer, brings extensive global surfing experience, while the school is known for its supportive coaching style and wide range of specialised programs.
A standout is their Adult Women’s Only Program, a six-week course combining surfing with strength, stretch and breathwork in an encouraging environment. The school also runs popular kids holiday programs and practical surf safety sessions. Currumbin Alley itself is one of the best learning waves on the Gold Coast, with gentle peeling waves wrapping around the headland and more challenging sections further out.
Australian Surfing Adventures – Tallebudgera
Australian Surfing Adventures is based at Tallebudgera and led by Jody Thomson, an ASI Level 3 Surfing Coach and elite surfer with extensive surfing tour experience. The school is especially known for combining surf coaching with travel, adventure and the Australian coastal lifestyle.

It is also one of the most convenient surf locations on the coast, with accommodation, cafés, restaurants, shopping, Pacific Fair and The Star Gold Coast all nearby.
Cheyne Horan School of Surf – Surfers Paradise

From beginner techniques designed to get students standing in their first lesson, through to intermediate skill development and elite coaching shaped by Cheyne’s competition experience, the school offers a clear pathway for surfers wanting to progress.
This school is ideal for visitors who want to learn in the centre of the Gold Coast action. The beachfront location is close to shops, restaurants, accommodation, public transport and major attractions, making it easy to fit surfing into a holiday. Surfers Paradise Beach offers soft sand, accessible waves and a buzzing coastal atmosphere.
Surf in Paradise – The Spit, Main Beach
At the northern end of the Gold Coast, Surf in Paradise operates from The Spit at Main Beach. Owned by Chris Maley, the school is known for small class sizes, personal attention and a strong focus on ocean knowledge.
The Spit is one of the Gold Coast’s more natural coastal areas, with Federation Walk Coastal Reserve, open parklands and a dog-friendly beach nearby. The break wall helps shape sandbanks and reduce strong sweeps, creating reliable learner-friendly conditions, while larger waves close by provide opportunities for progression. It is a peaceful contrast to the busier central beaches.
