Where Do Old Surfboards Go?
Posted: 20 April 2026

Ever wondered what happens to surfboards when they reach the end of their life?
Most traditional boards are made from foam, fibreglass, and resin - materials that are difficult to recycle, meaning many still end up in landfill.
But the good news is, the surf industry is evolving, and there are now better options.
Give your board a second life
• Repair it for small wave days or beginner use
• Donate to community programmes
• Keep it as a backup or training board
Get creative
• Turn it into furniture (benches, shelves, coffee tables)
• Use it as wall art or signage
• Repurpose into garden features or outdoor décor
Recycle & responsible options
• Sustainable Surf – creators of the ECOBOARD Project, promoting lower-impact materials
• Marko Foam – developing recycled EPS foam blanks
• Notox Surfboards – uses recycled materials and renewable energy
Some surfboard brands and shapers now offer take-back or recycling schemes, here are some examples:
• Sorted Surf Shop UK – offers a buy-back scheme, giving old boards value and keeping them in circulation

• Boardshop UK – trade in your used board towards a new one
• Almond Surfboards CA, USA – runs a recycling & loyalty programme encouraging responsible disposal and reuse

Check with local surf shops or schools - they may know nearby options
Eco boards - what’s changing?
More boards are now made using recycled foam, plant-based resins, and longer-lasting construction.
Pros:
✔ Lower environmental impact
✔ Longer lifespan
Considerations:
• Higher upfront cost
• Limited availability in some regions
The surf industry is moving in the right direction - but small actions still matter.
As surfers and ocean users, thinking about the full lifecycle of our equipment is part of protecting the environments we love.
Next time you upgrade your board… could you repair or repurpose your old one?
