Wave Selection

HELP

Now that you have your standing position on the board correct and you can jump to your feet with some speed and skill, you are now ready to select and catch a wave.

Selecting the correct wave to catch is quite a skill.
As a beginner, you will be looking for the peak of small peeling waves that are gently breaking. You may even start catching the white water of broken waves.

When you see a wave coming in, decide if you want to catch it. You should first check that no-one else is riding on the wave towards you and that no-one is in your line of surfing. Once you have decided to catch a wave, you should paddle into the right position.

Here are some common mistakes beginners make when selecting waves:

• Wave Not Going to Break - Selecting a wave that isn’t going to break. Only a breaking wave has the energy to push you along.

• Closing Out - Selecting a wave that is closing out (dumping). You can easily get dumped by this type of wave.

• Not Enough Power - Catching a wave that is too small to carry you along. The wave will not have enough power to allow you to get to up on the board. In this case, the wave will pass by you.
