Passionate about both stand-up paddling and education, Tony Lee brings years of expertise to the world of SUP. Based in Singapore, with an extensive background in training, coaching, and ministry work, he seamlessly combines his love for teaching with his dedication to watersports.

What is your background?

I live in Singapore and hold a Masters in Education and an Masters of Sciences in Training from the University of Leicester in the UK.

From 1993 to 2014, I operated my own training, life coaching, and consulting company. In 2015, I volunteered as Director of Asia for Verse by Verse Ministry International. In 2024, I started a new ministry called Eyesforchrist.org, providing free Bible studies.

As an ASI SUP Instructor and ASI Trainer, I teach SUP sessions in Singapore and frequently travel to nearby countries like Malaysia and Indonesia. I run SUP tours, provide instruction, and mentor local SUP schools to help grow the sport in the region—all while continuing my ministry work and spreading the message of faith.

What got you involved in the sport?

Staying active has always been a priority for me, and I’ve maintained my fitness through a variety of water sports over the years.

Before discovering stand-up paddling, I spent many years scuba diving and windsurfing. Then, in 2017, a friend introduced me to SUP—and from the very first experience, I was hooked.

I was drawn to the sport’s versatility and the incredible fitness benefits it offers. Since then, I’ve been paddling non-stop. It’s an ideal activity for both inland waters and the coastal areas around Singapore (and nearby countries)—no waves needed!

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

Teaching has always been my first love. When a friend who owned a watersports centre introduced me to SUP and encouraged me to take the instructor course, I didn’t hesitate—I said yes. That’s how, in 2018, I officially became an ASI SUP instructor.

Since then, I’ve been truly impressed by the high standards and quality of ASI’s teaching materials, which set the bar for SUP paddlers and instructors alike.

After earning my ASI SUP technical coach qualification, I took the next step and became an ASI SUP Instructor trainer, allowing me to mentor and train the next generation of instructors.

What are you doing now?

Now semi-retired, I dedicate my time to both ministry work and my passion for stand-up paddling.

My passion for promoting SUP in Singapore has been a driving force in my journey. Over the years, I have had the privilege of instructing thousands of students, regularly delivering ASI SUP Wise Certificate courses, Level 1, and Starter courses.

Beyond basic instruction, I focus on developing technical skills, coaching, and race training. I also organize weekly social paddling sessions, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to share in the joy of being on the water.

My involvement extends to organizing SUP competition events and working closely with local SUP schools and instructors to cultivate a vibrant paddling community.

My work takes me beyond Singapore—I travel across Asia, delivering SUP training programs and assisting in the organization of SUP competition race events.

As an ASI SUP Instructor trainer, I regularly conduct training workshops in Singapore and across Asia, equipping and mentoring the next generation of SUP instructors.

At 65, I have no intention of slowing down—paddling and being out on the water keeps me feeling young at heart and full of energy. SUP has been an incredible way to stay active, build connections, and embrace the energy of the sport.

What do you like about being an instructor?

Being an instructor allows me to merge my passion for teaching with my love for watersports. I get to spend time outdoors, stay active, and share the joy of SUP with others.

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is the opportunity to meet new people—every session brings a fresh connection and shared enthusiasm for paddling. Beyond Singapore, I also travel to other nearby countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, working with other ASI schools and exploring new waters.

Being part of a global network of SUP enthusiasts is truly inspiring, and I love meeting like-minded individuals who share the same dedication to the sport.

Tell us about an inspiring story about your student(s) or memorable experiences,  you've had while instructing.

I run a senior paddling session every Wednesday, providing a welcoming space for older participants to enjoy the sport at their own pace.  One of the most inspiring moments is helping senior citizens get on a paddleboard for the first time. Seeing the joy on their faces when they finally stand up and paddle is incredibly rewarding. Every smile makes the effort worthwhile.

On weekends, I conduct regular training for students aiming to compete, alongside lessons for newcomers looking to try SUP for the first time. It’s incredibly fulfilling to watch people grow in confidence on the water, developing skills they never imagined they’d have.

Equally rewarding is seeing new instructors build their careers—many go on to work in other countries, embracing new cultures and experiences.

SUP isn't just about technique; it’s about community, fun, and fitness. Seeing people embrace it for its social and health benefits makes every session meaningful.
