Introducing SUP and SUP Yoga Instructor – Lisa Somers

Posted date: 17-September-2020

AUSTRALIA. Meet Lisa Somers, an ASI SUP and SUP Yoga instructor based in Adelaide. 11 years ago, Lisa moved from London to Adelaide, having always been into health and fitness she was introduced to SUP Yoga by a friend. Her first time on a board and she was able to do a headstand from there she was hooked.

1.       What is your background?

I've always been into health and fitness.  I'm a yoga instructor who moved to Adelaide from London about 11 years ago.
2.       What got you involved in the sport?

A friend who had her own board asked if I wanted to come to a SUP yoga class with her.  My first time on a board and I did a headstand and I was hooked.
3.       Why did you become an ASI instructor?

A local SUP school asked if I would teach SUP yoga for them and take lessons.  They were an ASI school and they wanted me to become an instructor.  So, I did level 1 and 2.  I later went to Byron Bay and did my SUP yoga qualification.
4.       What are you doing now?

When the work finished at the SUP school, I really missed teaching so I bought a few boards of my own and set up my own little business.
5.       What do you like about being an ASI instructor?

ASI have high standards and are known worldwide.  I like working for myself and being outside on the water.
6.       Has COVID changed what you do?  How?

We are quite lucky in South Australia with COVID.  During our lockdown we were still able to do outdoor activities as long as we followed social distancing and hygiene rules.  It’s pretty easy to keep apart on the water and I made sure all boards and paddles disinfected between students and that there was no paddle or board swaps during the lesson.
7.       Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?

A couple of years ago I had one lady who was so nervous about standing up but eventually after slowly guiding her through it she stood up and had the biggest smile of achievement I've ever seen.  It still makes me happy thinking about it.  Also, when the dolphins come and join in, I teach very near a local dolphin sanctuary and we are almost guaranteed to see them.
