HELP

UK. Meet Debbie Manning AKA Salty, a lover of all water sports and proud ASI qualified instructor. Growing up on the north coast of Kent, England, Debbie spends all her spare time at the beach while also running a multi-disciplinary water sports school in the summer months, with a focus on SUP/surf, swim workshops, wellbeing days and more.

We asked Debbie a few questions to find out about her water sports journey…

What is your background?
My name is Debbie AKA Salty. I am a local girl who has been super lucky to grow up in Whitstable, England. I am a nurse and am currently back in Uni after receiving a secondment.

What got you involved in the sport?
I love all water spots and will have a go at anything. I spend all my spare time down at the beach, I enjoy sea swimming all year round as well as sailing, kayaking and obviously teaching SUP

Why did you become an ASI instructor?
Well, I volunteered for a guy a few years back helping to get kids out on the water and I kind of grew from there. I completed a few sea safety qualifications, boating and sailing before I became an ASI SUP instructor.

What are you doing now?
So I now help run a well-established SUP school in Whitstable during the summer months.  We are a multi-disciplinary water sports centre and run lots of great water sports activities. I teach SUP run tours, swim workshops and wellbeing based days.

What do you like about being an ASI instructor?
I feel proud to be an ASI SUP instructor.

Tell us about an interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?

I instructed a group of mental health nurses post c19 lock down, it was beautifully still morning and we paddled at sunrise. We shared a few stories of our nursing times and sunk into the zen.

A big thank you to Debbie for sharing some insight in becoming an ASI qualified SUP instructor!
