HELP

AUSTRALIA. Meet ASI Master Surf Coach Bradford Lee on the Sunshine Coast, Australia.

Brad began surfing over 50 years ago around the South Coast of NSW, Australia. During this time, he completed a Bachelor of Education and commenced teaching whilst living at the small coastal town of Culburra.

In 1990 he moved to Queensland and settled in Peregian Beach. Teaching at the local High School where he set surfing up as a subject. Throughout this time, he has coached many young surfers and various representative teams both State & National level.

We asked him some questions to find out more…

What got you involved in the sport?

Originally, I started surfing because I loved the ocean and enjoyed the stoke from being at one with nature and the pure adrenaline rush from catching waves. I continue to surf today for the very same reasons.

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

I have coached & judged surfing for over 30 years now and with my business partner, Jeff Previti. We started running our business Sunshine Coast Elite Surf Coaching 12 years ago. A few years ago, we decided to register our business through the ASI. I now am a Master Coach with the ASI.

What are you doing now?

Presently I have retired from teaching and running Sunshine Coast Elite Surf Coaching. This is a boutique type surf school which provides a service for beginner, intermediate and High Performing Surfers in one on one or small groups.

What do you like about being an ASI instructor?

The best thing about being an ASI instructor is to help surfers to become the best surfer they can possibly be. Whether it’s their first time on a wave or they are training to qualify for the WSL level. I just love to share in their surfing journey.

Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?

I have had many highlights in my coaching career. Coaching a junior Queensland School Team in 1996 which included Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson & David Rastovich. Coaching the under 14,16 & 18 Queensland Female State title winners in the same year. Perhaps the greatest moment was coaching under 18 Australian champions Noah Stocca and Isabella Nichols.

A huge thank you to Brad for taking the time to give us some insight into life as a Master Surf Coach.
