BAILING

From a standing position, the most common way to bail is to simply step off the back of the board and fall backwards into the water. Always be aware of the general depth of the water so you don’t hurt yourself when you step off the board.

WIPING OUT

Wiping out or falling off is part of learning to surf. There are many ways of wiping out. You will naturally practice this many times.
In a wipe-out, try to fall or shallow dive off the board. Don’t dive too deep in case the water level is shallow. Remember, try to be aware of how deep the water is where you are surfing.
Be careful when surfacing after a wipeout. Leg-rope recoil can cause your surfboard to spring back at you. Before resurfacing, you can check for tension in your leg-rope. Keep your head down until you feel the tension lessen. It is also a good idea to come up with your hands first to feel for the location of your surfboard. You don’t want to get hit by it.
