HELP

CZECHOSLOVAKIA. A little catch up with ASI Level 1 Surf Instructor Jana Kašová. From discovering the ocean and surfing at age 20 to Spider Fish bites with Czech actors we asked her a few questions about her ‘Surf Life’ and career as an ASI instructor.

What is your background?

I am a Czech living in Portugal because of surfing. I am working as a Surf instructor, Copywriter and Frontend Developer. When I was 20 years old, I saw the ocean and tried surfing for the first time. I fell in love immediately. After discovering surfing and the ocean I started spending more and more time there even though I am from a landlocked country. So, I lived first in France (Hossegor), then northern Spain (Bilbao) and now in Portugal (Lisbon and Peniche) usually thanks to my studies and internships.

What got you involved in the sport?

I went for a road trip with friends and I ended up living the surf life. I used to snowboard so I found out about surfing in one magazine about extreme sports and as soon as I got the chance to do it, I couldn’t resist.

Why did you become an ASI instructor?

Originally it was because I wanted to be able to stay in Portugal and work as a surf instructor but after a couple of seasons’ I realized I was doing it because I like to pass on my knowledge to students and being able to constantly learn by doing it.

What are you doing now?

I have "an office job” in Portugal, I work as a Content Producer for Vodafone TV, I do some Frontend Development projects, Webdesign and Social Media as well.  During the summer season I still work as a surf instructor for Surfcamp CZ in Peniche, Baleal. It sounds like a lot but it actually combines really well.

What do you like about being an ASI instructor?

I like to work outside, to be on the beach, close to the ocean, pass the knowledge, see my students getting better and share the successes of ridden waves with them.

Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?

There are so many of them! However, there is one absurdly interesting situation which happened to me this year. Usually there are like 1 or 2 cases of spider fish bite per season. However, I had one group for a week (they were quite famous Czech actors) and I told them how rare is the bite. Anyway, one of them got bit one day. After some time, they were fine, no problem, so we laughed about it the second day, saying that they were unlucky to get the one case of the season. Although, in an hour his wife, also an actress, got bit as well, the second day after her husband! Luckily, they were still laughing about it and they wanted to continue with surfing.
