HELP

If you’re thinking about becoming a surfing instructor, one of the first things you’ll come across is different instructor levels.

But what do they actually mean?
And how do you progress from beginner to experienced instructor to master coach?

Understanding surfing instructor levels is key to choosing the right course, building your skills, and developing a long-term career in the surf industry.

Why Instructor Levels Matter

Instructor levels exist to ensure that teaching standards stay high across the industry. They provide a clear framework so instructors are trained to work with students at the right level, in the right conditions, and with the right approach.

They also give you a progression route. Instead of trying to learn everything at once, you develop step by step. Starting with the fundamentals and gradually moving into more advanced coaching.

The ASI Surfing Instructor Pathway

The Academy of Surfing Instructors (ASI) provides an internationally recognised training pathway, designed to take you from entry-level instructor to advanced coaching roles.

This pathway is divided into four levels: Level 1 through to Level 4 Master Surfing Coach. Each stage expands your skills, increases your confidence, and opens up new career opportunities.

Here’s how it works:

Level 1 Surfing Instructor

Level 1 is where most instructors begin their journey. This course focuses on teaching beginners in a safe, structured, and enjoyable way, giving you the foundations to start your journey as a surfing instructor.

You’ll develop a strong understanding of how to introduce people to surfing, including how to manage groups in the water, communicate clearly, and deliver lessons that build confidence from the very first wave. There is also a strong emphasis on ocean awareness and safety, ensuring you can create a positive and controlled learning environment.

At this level, you’ll focus on:

  • Teaching beginner surfers in whitewater

  • Understanding ocean safety and risk management

  • Delivering structured, engaging lessons

  • Building confidence in communication and group management

This level provides the essential skills to start working in a surf school and begin gaining real-world teaching experience.

Level 2 Surfing Instructor

Level 2 is the next step in your surfing instructor career, designed to help you work with intermediate-improver surfers who are ready to progress beyond the basics.

At this stage, the focus is on delivering lessons that help students refine their technique and build confidence. You’ll learn how to teach key manoeuvres such as bottom turns, top turns, cutbacks, and linking movements in 3ft surf.

At this level, you’ll focus on:

  • Delivering intermediate-level surfing lessons safely

  • Teaching core manoeuvres such as bottom turns, top turns and cutbacks

  • Helping students link movements and improve flow

  • Instructing surfers in waves (up to 3ft)

As well as expanding your instructing ability, this level also opens up more opportunities as an instructor, allowing you to work with a wider range of students, increase your earning potential, and to build long-term relationships by helping surfers continue their progression.

Level 3 Surfing Coach

At Level 3, the focus shifts from instruction into advanced coaching. This stage is designed for instructors who want to take their coaching skills to the next level and work more closely with surfers progressing from intermediate to advanced ability.

You’ll develop a deeper understanding of performance coaching, learning how to analyse technique, identify areas for improvement, and deliver more personalised feedback. The emphasis is on helping surfers refine their skills and make meaningful progress in their surfing.

At this level, you’ll focus on:

  • Analysis and technique correction

  • Drills and skills to improve performance

  • Video analysis for detailed feedback

  • Creating individualised coaching programmes

  • Assessing and coaching both individuals and groups

This level equips you with the tools to support surfers as they progress from intermediate to advanced levels, positioning you as a knowledgeable and capable coach focused on performance and development

Level 4 Master Surfing Coach

Level 4 represents the highest level of surfing coaching within the ASI pathway. At this stage, the focus is on working with elite-advanced surfers at a high-performance level.

This level goes beyond day-to-day coaching and moves into long-term athlete development and programme design. It’s designed for experienced coaches with a minimum of 10 years coaching experience, who want to operate at the top of the profession.

At this level, you’ll focus on:

  • Coaching competition skills and strategy and elite-advanced surfing skills.

  • High-performance coaching and athlete development

  • Advanced analysis and feedback techniques

Level 4 positions you as a master coach, opening opportunities to work with competitive elite surfers.

International Recognition

ASI qualifications are internationally recognised, meaning you can:

  • Work in surf schools around the world

  • Travel and teach in destinations like Australia, Portugal, and beyond

  • Build a global career in watersports

Why Choose a Structured Pathway?

Choosing a recognised pathway with ASI ensures:

  • High-quality training

  • Industry-relevant skills

  • Better job opportunities

  • Safer learning environments for students

It also shows employers and surf schools that you are professionally trained and committed.

Becoming a surfing instructor is about more than just surfing ability. It’s about teaching safely, communicating effectively, and helping others build confidence in the water.

The ASI instructor levels provide a clear and professional pathway to develop these skills. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to progress further, each level supports your growth as an instructor.
