HELP

MALAYSIA.   Swee Chin Khoo lives in Penang and is a full time mum with 2 kids.  She fell in love with SUP a few years ago, and becoming an ASI SUP Instructor allowed her to share her passion of SUP with others plus offer the flexibility to look after her family.  It was the perfect solution, says Swee Chin

1.       What got you involved in the sport?

I live in Penang island and love the ocean.  I started out kayaking, got my star 1 & BCU 2 certification. However when I was ready  to buy myself a kayak, I had limited storage space  as I stay in an apartment.  There were no Inflatable kayaks available at that time and the folding kayak was too complicated.

In 2017, while searching the interNet, iSUP popped up.  Immediately I grabbed it and taught myself how to stand up paddle. I fell in love with SUPingimmediately!!

2.       Why did you become an ASI instructor?

I love to share my passion with my friends and family. I realised I do not have proper knowledge to teach. That’s why I decided to become an instructor.

I choose ASI because is internationally recognised and provide high quality training program to become a SUP instructor. With proper safety guidelines and teaching, you can have fun & confident SUPing.

3.       What are you doing now?

I set up my sup school called Penang SUPing Sport in year 2020. My husband and me run this mobile sup business together. We doing this part time basis, teaching sup classes on Saturday, Sunday or public holidays.

4.       What do you like about being an ASI instructor?

I feel proud every time I put on my ASI instructor t-shirt when teaching my students.

As an instructor I have responsibility to prepare the training lesson, check the weather, wave and tides conditions and identify possible hazards that might be around when class is conducted. ASI equipped me well with this knowledge. Safety is our first priority.

5.       How has COVID changed things?

COVID has is a bit hard on business. Since May 2020 we are lockdown. No lesson can be conducted. No beach access.

But,  I take this opportunity to do workouts at home.

6.       Tell us about funny situation that has happened to you when instructing?

The best thing for me is to see my student stand up for the first time and splash!!  Their first wipeout!   I tell them,  “after tasting the ocean you will get it right”.

At one time we had small fishes jump onto the board. That was an awesome experience.
