Ability to stop your SUP board is an essential skill to keep you out of danger and from running into hazards.
To stop the board effectively requires balance and paddling technique. You may need to practice stopping a few times before you master it !
How to Stop your Board
The best way to stop the board is:
To lower your centre of gravity by bending the knees
Put the paddle into the water, behind the heels, towards rear of board.
Using the back of the blade, bring yourself to a slow stop, allow the paddle to drag in the water.
Stopping Your Board More Suddenly
To stop more suddenly:
Lower your centre of gravity by bending the knees.
Put the paddle into the water, behind the heels towards the rear of board.
Use the back of the blade, pull the paddle forward, harder, towards the heels, for a more rapid de-acceleration.
To keep straight, change hands and use back of the blade to continue to de-accelerate.
Always maintaining a lower centre of gravity.
