The ASI Level 4 Master Surfing Coach is the highest level surfing coach qualification you can attain.   Coach competition skills and strategy and elite-advanced surfing skills.

Coaches are highly experienced with a minimum of 10 years coaching experience and elite advanced surfing ability.

Coach individuals and groups to improve advanced to elite-advanced level surfing ability. 
Coach competition surfing skills and strategy.

Elite-advanced level surf locations in surf over 6ft (2 metres)

Surfing instructor in the surfing or outdoor recreation industry.
Industry job roles that require surfing knowledge (e.g. marketing, sales, retail)
Competition surfing coach

  • Identify and manage surfing risks/hazards
  • Emergency processes and response
  • Coaching practices, styles and legal and ethical responsibilities
  • Prepare and conduct individualised long-term surfing competition training programs
  • Evaluate and modify competition coaching programs

Before starting this course, you will have

  • Elite-advanced surfing skill and knowledge level equivalent to Level 10 Elite-Advanced Surfer.  Able to perform and link advanced level manoeuvres including roundhouse cut-back, floater, snap, vertical re-entry, tube ride, in surf over 6ft  (2 metres) at different surf breaks

  • Hold current ASI Level 3 Surfing Coach certificate.

  • Minimum of 10 years recent surfing instruction experience.  

  • English speaking skills.

The following study options are available for this course.

Workshop:  An intensive course that focuses on the major components, with the ability to interact with the trainer and the group. 
Duration:  2 days. 

Knowledge Requirements

Provide 2 x coaching progams for students you have coached in the past 24 months.
Coach for recreational surfing competitions, to a minimum of regional level. Example of evidence to include competition entry, results, participant background information, goals, events, training phases, testing and measuring, dairy notes, risk management plan, evaluation plan, modifications, legal and ethical responsibilities.

Skills Requirements

Demonstrate ASI Level 9 Advanced Surfer.surfing ability:  Able to perform and link advanced level manoeuvres - roundhouse cut-back, floater, snap, vertical re-entry, tube ride, with power and speed, in surf up to 6ft  (2 metres), at different types of surf breaks.

  • Workshop:  practice at workshop. Submit own video after workshop.

  • Submit a current ASI Surf Rescue certificate or other surf rescue certificate 

  • Submit a current senior first aid certificate

Surf Rescue and First Aid Certificates can be provided before or after workshop or within 12 months of enrolment. 

Time to Complete 
You have 12 months from date of workshop, or date or online enrolment, to complete all course requirements.

12 months membership

Equipment required to complete the training: 

  • Suitable surf clothing
  • Fibreglass surfboard to demonstrate elite-advanced surfing skills.

ASI Level 4 Master Surfing Coach
(valid for 12 months)

Each year, ASI Instructors renew their ASI Surfing Instructor certificate.
