Read Jonathan’s story and discover what inspired his journey to become an ASI SUP Instructor.
What is your background?
I live in County Offaly, Ireland, close to the glorious River Shannon. Living beside the river has given me a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and adventure.
What got you involved in the sport?
I've always loved the outdoors and water-based activities, having grown up beside the River Shannon. Spending so much time on the water naturally led me to paddleboarding and other adventure sports.
Why did you become an ASI Instructor?
I became an ASI Instructor in 2016. I believe we were among the first group to gain ASI qualifications in Ireland, and I wanted to help others enjoy the sport safely while building confidence on the water.
What are you doing now?
I own and operate Mid Ireland Adventure, an outdoor adventure company based in the heart of Ireland. Our mission is to help people of all ages and abilities discover the benefits of getting outdoors through fun, safe, and memorable experiences.
We offer stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, mountain biking, guided hiking tours, and bespoke running events, with many of our activities taking place on the beautiful waterways of the River Shannon and the scenic trails of Lough Boora Discovery Park.
We welcome families, schools, youth groups, community organisations, corporate teams, and visitors from Ireland and abroad, creating experiences that showcase the very best of Ireland's outdoors.
Winning an award for our business has been a proud milestone and reflects our commitment to delivering high-quality outdoor experiences and exceptional customer service.
Alongside introducing beginners to paddlesports, we place a strong emphasis on water safety, building confidence, and making adventure accessible to everyone. Whether it's a child's first time on a paddleboard, a guided tour through the Midlands, or a team-building event, our goal is to inspire people to enjoy the outdoors and create lasting memories.
What do you like about being an instructor?
The most rewarding part is introducing people to the world of SUP, especially beginners. I particularly enjoy giving young children the opportunity to experience paddleboarding, as many may never have had the chance otherwise.
Tell us about an inspiring story about one of your students
One experience that has always stayed with me involved a school group. I noticed a teenage girl with additional needs standing on the bank while the rest of the group prepared to go on the water. When I asked one of her teachers why she wasn't taking part, I was told they didn't think she would be able to do it.
I paddled over and asked her if she would like to give it a try. She smiled and said yes. We got her fitted with a wetsuit and buoyancy aid and onto a board, and she did amazingly well despite her additional needs.
Seeing her confidence grow and the enjoyment on her face was incredibly rewarding. Moments like that remind me that with the right encouragement and support, people are often capable of much more than others believe.
