ASI Instructor Completes SUP Fundraising Challenge Dressed as a Penguin

Newly qualified ASI SUP Instructor David Jacobs from Stonehaven in Scotland has successfully completed his fundraising challenge to paddle from Stonehaven to Aberdeen dressed as a penguin. Some 15 miles of rugged coastline which took him 5 hours.

Dave really wanted to do something to support Children in need, a UK-wide fundraising day supported by the BBC. He decided on the penguin costume as his favourite film is Surf’s UP - a film about surfing penguins.

David says: “I set off from Stonehaven at 10am in great weather and sea conditions. It was tough paddling wearing the penguin outfit - it was hot and I had very limited visibility in the suit.

He says: “The only real hazard was crossing the very busy shipping channel in Aberdeen where a very large ship blasted his horn at me, either to move out the way or maybe just a friendly blast. It’s not every day a Penguin on a SUP gets in your way!”

“I was also helped along by seals and several pods of dolphins who joined me along the way, which was amazing. I reached Aberdeen at 3pm, greeted by a few gob-smacked surfers!”

He has been a SUP paddler for 10 years and decided to complete his ASI training in October 2017 as he wants to set up his own community focussed SUP school in Stonehaven.

His target was to raise £1,000 for Children in Need which he succeeded. “This is the first of many fundraising challenges for me.” Said David.
