Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, England, situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast. Only 2 hr 45 minute drive from London.
The town is a gateway situated halfway along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms.
Weymouth Harbour is home to cross-channel ferries, pleasure boats and private yachts, and nearby Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held (due to the consistent winds)
The coastline is very scenic with natural vegetation and a range of ideal supping locations. Just near the training venue is an inland lagoon of about 12 miles long, offering sheltered and safe beginner and also winter training for the more serious suppers.
The Harbour offers excellent paddling with protected and exposed wind locations. Water temperatures are usually 4 – 5 degrees Celsius warmer than other locations in the UK, with crystal clear waters. As a result, diving is popular here.
The harbour coastline and the consistent winds make this one of the best downwinding locations in the UK, with 5 to 10 mile downwinder routes.
The wind is generally south-west however due to the round shape of the bay, downwinding is still achievable in any wind direction.
