Does the Moon and Tides Affect Volcanic or Earthquake Activity?

Posted: 28 January 2018

HELP

The recent increased earthquake and volcanic activity could be related to the moon. On 31 January 2018, a “super blue blood moon” will occur. The last time this occurred was in 1866, that was also a year of major earthquake activity and volcanic eruptions.

In the outdoor watersports industry, we know the effect the moon has on us. We live our lives by the moon, which controls the tides, and in turn determines whether we can get out on the water.

There is evidence that the moons affect, via the rising and falling tides, places extra gravitational stresses on the planet’s solid crust. (Research http://www.futurity.org/tidal-cycles-volcanic-eruptions-1661992/)

A “super blue blood moon” is a trifecta of moon events - it is a supermoon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse, all at once. Only occurring about every 150 years (last time in 1866).

More interesting is an internet post in March 2012, “The Musings of Chiefio” that talks about a possible link between the moon and volcanic and earthquake activity, listing dates of activity in 1866 and that major activity leading up to 1866.

Interesting it all certainly is, or is it simply coincidental ?

Supermoon: occurs when there is a full moon (occurs each month) and distance the moon is closest to the earth match up. This occurs about one in every 14 full moons.

Blue moon: means extra moon. It does not mean the moon appears to be blue (which can happen, but the atmosphere needs to be loaded with a lot of volcano dust and debris).
Blue moons can occur either when: there is a second full moon within a calendar month. This happens once every two or three years. BUT for 2018 is :1 January and 31 January 2018.

OR can be the third of four full moons during a particular season (fall, winter, spring, or summer). Usually, there are only three full moons in a particular season. This happens once every 2.5 years.

Total lunar eclipse: occurs when the sun, Earth, and moon are in alignment. The moon falls into the path of the Earth’s shadow. Causing a red glow (said to be a reflection of the earths sunsets and sunrises).
There are usually two or three lunar eclipses in given year.

Earthquakes:
October 8, 1865, San Francisco earthquake
August 31, 1866 Mecklenburg, North Carolina Earthquake
1866 Charleston, S. Carolina Earthquake
Albania: Narta, Vlore, Kanina 1866 Earthquake

Alaska Peninsula 1866
Albania 1866
Philippines: N Luzon: Laoag 1866
