HELP

Meet Greg Collier, an ASI Instructor at Jungle Surf in Forster, NSW, Australia, and real-life Peter Pan. At 71 years young, Greg is still actively teaching and passing on his knowledge to the next generation of paddlers in the noble art of SUP.

We grabbed a few words with this legend.

ASI: What is your background?

Greg: I am a retired school teacher who has lived on the mid north coast of NSW all of my life. I have always been involved in water sports such as SCUBA diving and surfing.

ASI: What got you involved in the sport of SUP?

Greg: I had a snow skiing accident 10 years ago that required a shoulder replacement which made surfing very difficult. As part of my rehab, I started paddle boarding. This allowed me to surf again and I am now a passionate SUP surfer, travelling to many Australian and overseas surf spots.

ASI: Why did you become an ASI instructor?

Greg: The team at Jungle Surf in Tuncurry needed help during the busy summer months and the pristine waters of Wallis Lake provided an ideal environment for people to enjoy supping.

ASI: What are you doing now?

Greg: Enjoying retirement and caravanning with my wife and dog. We get away as much as possible (COVID permitting) to explore the great Aussie environment. I’m also still working as a SUP instructor for Jungle Surf.

ASI: What do you like about being an ASI instructor?

Greg: I love being out on the water and meeting lots of amazing people. It’s great to see the improvement of students after a lesson and I try to make sure everyone has fun.

ASI: Tell us about funny or interesting or nice situation that has happened to you with instructing?

Greg: I get lots of return clients when they come on their annual holiday to Forster. We also often encounter fish and dolphins which really adds to the experience.

A huge ASI thank you to Greg for the insights into life as a SUP instructor and for demonstrating that age is merely a number. All the best for the many adventures ahead!
