Are you thinking of a holiday in Portugal?  Check out these 5 great locations with amazing advanced waves.   Contact the local ASI school and instructors to get more info about the locations, surfing tips and techniques and accommodation options.

Portugal is a wave rich country with world class waves to suit all abilities from the mutant mountains of Nazare, the thumping, unforgiving barrels of Supertubes to the gentler waves with crystal clear waters on the Algarve.

Portugal’s top 5 waves include:

(1) Peniche - Supertubes

A beach break that packs a punch, elevator take offs, deep pits and one the location on the WSL championship tours venues.

(2) Ericeira -  Coxos

A long, hollow world class right hand reef break, with heaving barrels, long fast and furious. This is no wave for the fainthearted, just getting in and out is a mission. The reef can handle at almost any size but best at head to double over head.

(3) Lisbon- Carcavelos

In the suburbs of Lisbon is another thumping Portuguese beach break which can be very hollow at low tide.

(4) Arrifana

A great beach break and when the swell picks up there’s a right-hand reef that can handle large swells. A good place to dip your toe into big wave riding.

(5) Algarve - Zavial

A short sand bottomed right hand point break and the Jewel of the Algarve’s south Coast.

Now we’ve introduced you to 5 of Portugal’s best waves, it’s worth pointing out they are for advanced surfers only.  So, before you book a flight and head out, asses your ability and get some ‘one to one’ tuition from an ASI instructor at an ASI accredited school.
