Course Information


Overview:

ASI created this SUP sport specific water safety rescue award specifically for stand up paddle instructors.

Aim:

Provide SUP Instructors with skills and knowledge to perform simple rescues in the ocean in breaking waves of 1 ½ feet ( ½ metre).

Locations defined as: ocean in breaking waves of 1 ½ feet ( ½ metre).

Topics covered:

  • Identify emergency situations
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Apply SUP rescue techniques
  • Demonstrate simulated in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients, whilst negotiating the surf zone to shore.
  • Identify the signs of potential spinal injuries and respond and treat accordingly
  • Emergency signals and incident reporting

Entry requirements:

  • be medically and physically fit
  • have surf and ocean awareness and knowledge
  • able to swim a minimum of 200m (650 ft) in open water, run 200m (650 ft) , prone paddle  200m (650 ft) on stand up paddle board, in the ocean, within 10 minutes
  • have English competence equivalent to IELTS 6

Delivery Options

The ASI SUP Water Safety Rescue course can be completed by:

  • Attending a workshop (full workshop)
  • Attending a workshop (proficiency). Australia only. Attend practical - completing mission and in-water rescues.

Delivery option - Workshop:

This intensive 5 hour workshop is ideal for people who are comfortable in the surf and can swim 200 metres without stopping and prone paddle effectively.

Workshop course requirements:

To gain your SUP Water Safety Rescue Award (Surf) qualification, you will need to:

At workshop:

  • complete timed SUP mission: 200 metre (650 ft) swim, 200 metre (650 ft) run, 200 metre (650 ft) prone paddle on SUP board, without stopping, within 10 minutes
  • demonstrate in-water rescues, negotiating the surf zone
  • complete multi-choice test

Before or after the workshop, provide copies of:

  • Personal identification (e.g drivers licence or passport)
  • Senior First Aid certificate

Senior First Aid:  The certificate date must be no more than 3 years old from date of completion.  Find Description and Approved Senior First Aid Training Providers

Duration:

Workshop: 5 hours
Proficiency: 3 ½ hours (Australia only)
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.

Bring to workshop:

SUP clothing
Suitable SUP surf board to demonstrate rescues and paddling.


Expiry:

The Certificate is valid for 24 months (or 12 months in Australia) from the date you completed the workshop.

To obtain a new certificate, participants complete the course again.
