Course Information


Overview:

ASI created this SUP sport specific water safety rescue award specifically for stand up paddle instructors and anyone who paddles regularly.

Aim:

Provide SUP Instructors with skills and knowledge to perform simple rescues in SUP enclosed flat water and exposed waters locations.

Locations defined as: Flat water or exposed waters (no breaking waves)


Career outcomes:

Water safety and rescue skills for Stand Up Paddle Instructors.

Topics covered:

  • Identify emergency situations
  • Respond to emergency situations
  • Apply SUP rescue techniques
  • Demonstrate simulated in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients
  • Identify the signs of potential spinal injuries and respond and treat accordingly
  • Emergency signals and incident reporting

Entry requirements:

  • be medically and physically fit
  • able to swim a minimum of 200m in open water, run 200m, prone paddle  200m on stand up paddle board within 10 minutes
  • be an ASI SUP Instructor or completing ASI SUP instructor qualifications
  • have English competence equivalent to IELTS 6

Delivery Options

The ASI SUP Water Safety Rescue course can be completed by:

  • Attending a workshop (full workshop)
  • Attending a workshop (proficiency). Australia only. Attend practical - completing mission and in-water rescues.
  • Flexible learning

Delivery option - Workshop:

This intensive 5 hour workshop is ideal for people who are comfortable in the water and can swim 200 metres without stopping and prone paddle effectively.

Workshop course requirements:

To gain your SUP Water Safety Rescue qualification, you will need to:

At workshop:

  • complete timed SUP mission: 200 metre swim, 200 metre run, 200 metre prone paddle on SUP board, without stopping, within 10 minutes
  • demonstrate in-water rescues
  • complete multi-choice test

Before or after the workshop, provide copies of:

  • Personal identification (e.g drivers licence or passport)
  • Senior First Aid certificate

Senior First Aid:  The certificate date must be no more than 3 years old from date of completion.  Find Description and Approved Senior First Aid Training Providers

Duration:

Workshop: 5 hours
Proficiency: 3 ½ hours (Australia only)
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.

Bring to workshop:

SUP clothing
Suitable flat water SUP board to demonstrate rescues and paddling.

Expiry:

The Certificate is valid for 24 months (or 12 months in Australia) from the date you completed the workshop.

To obtain a new certificate, participants complete the course again.


Delivery option - Flexible:

This option is for ASI SUP Instructors who have completed the ASI SUP Rescue workshop in the past and need to update their rescue skills.
We post out your training and instructional manuals, you complete assessments and submit video to ASI.
