Course Information


Overview:

This instructor's course is the next level up from the Enclosed Flat Water instructor level and has additional instructional methods and safety risks.

It covers basic instruction techniques, equipment and operations, planning and conducting SUP sessions, risk management and safely managing groups of students in exposed waters.

BONUS: A personal SUP Paddling Video Assessment with review is included in the workshop, so you can assess your own paddling technique.

On successful completion of this course, instructors are elgible to enrol in the ASI Level 2 SUP Technical Coach (Exposed Waters) course


Aim:

Plan and conduct basic stand up paddle sessions, short SUP paddle tours and SUP rentals and manage clients safely in exposed waters locations.

Exposed Waters locations are defined as:

  • coastal beaches and bays and harbours and large inland bodies of water
  • greater than 1 km (0.6 miles) wide
  • shore break up to 1 ½ feet
  • swell size up to 2ft
  • no breaking waves
  • wind speed less than 12 knots, offshore wind less than 10 knots
  • water depth no less than 3ft
  • free from hazards
  • no more than 250 metres from shore

Career outcomes:

Stand Up Paddle instructor in the SUP or outdoor recreation industry.
Industry job roles that require SUP knowledge (e.g. marketing, sales, retail)

  • Identify exposed waters SUP lesson/activity risks and hazards
  • Emergency processes and response
  • Logistics and how to plan exposed waters SUP sessions
  • Suitable boards, equipment and resources
  • Methods to manage clients safely in exposed waters
  • Deliver basic exposed waters SUP lessons and SUP activities
  • Evaluating your own SUP sessions  
  • Identify correct and incorrect technique using ASI assessment competency guide
  • Use video analysis to assess your own paddling ability
  • Demonstrate correct paddling technique including the 5 phases of the paddle stroke in exposed waters
  • Understand how to negotiate swell (not breaking waves) - into swell, alongside swell, with swell
  • Understand how to perform step back pivot turns - heel side and toe side

Entry requirements:

Before starting this course, you must:

  • Have completed a minimum of 40 hours on water paddling in exposed waters locations
  • Hold or completing  ASI Level 1 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Enclosed Flat Waters) course
  • Able to understand English (equivalent to IELTS 6 )
  • Paddle with correct paddling technique, confidence and safety in exposed waters locations, demonstrating: paddle with the board in trim / change hands correctly / correct posture with hinging from the hips, back straight and eyes looking ahead / correct reach / paddle vertical at entry / feathering paddle at exit / paddle in a straight line / turn and stop effectively

Delivery Options

The ASI Level 2 SUP Instructor (Exposed Waters) course can be completed by:

  • Attending a workshop
  • Flexible learning

Delivery option - Workshop:

This intensive 1 day workshop will focus on completing the major components of the course. Some additional homework is also required to complete assessments and gain practical on-the-job instruction experience.    
Ideal for: students who want to cover theory components in an intensive format.

Workshop course requirements:

To receive your ASI Level 2 SUP Instructor (Exposed Waters) certificate you need to:

  • Complete workshop theory, practical assessments and on-line multi-choice test.
  • Hold or completing the  ASI Level 1 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Enclosed Flat Waters) course
  • Provide a Flat Water OR Surf Rescue certificate (no more than 24 months old. Australia: 12 months old)
  • Provide a Senior First Aid Certificate (no more than 3 years old).  
  • After the workshop, complete 10 hours assisting in exposed waters SUP instruction at an ASI accredited or other approved SUP school. (Exemption: recognition of previous experience can be provided).
  • Provide personal identification (e.g drivers licence or passport)
  • Provide a Working with Children Check (as applicable to the country are working in. Information)

Note: You can enrol in the ASI Level 2 course at the same time as completing Level 1 course.

Demonstrating competency:
If you are not able to demonstrate competent exposed waters paddling skills at the workshop, one additional video assessment can be submitted for free.   

Duration:

Workshop: 1 day
Plus post workshop test and practical work experience
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.

Bring to workshop:

SUP clothing and suitable SUP board to demonstrate exposed waters paddling skills.


Delivery option: Flexible learning

Work at your own pace.  We post out your instructor manuals. Complete assessments and practical on-the-job instruction experience to suit your schedule.   
Ideal for: students who are working with an ASI Accredited SUP School, are experienced paddlers, with some previous instruction experience and require flexibility in completing their qualification.
Duration:  12 months to complete the course and return Assessment Record Book to ASI.
