ASI SUP Wise - Level 2 Exposed Waters

ASI Level 2 Exposed Waters is the second level of stand up paddle knowledge and skills.   It applies to protected coastal locations or large inland bodies of water where there is potential for uneven, choppy waters and swell up to 2ft but no breaking waves.  Learn new techniques to stay balanced and safe in these locations. 

You should be a competent paddler at the Enclosed Flat Water location before venturing into uneven and exposed waters.

Course Information

Aim

Stand up paddle with correct technique, confidence and safety in exposed waters locations.

Location Description

Coastal beaches and bays & inland bodies of water greater than 1km (0.6 ml) wide
Shore break up to 1.5 ft
Surface chop or swell up to 2ft
No breaking waves
No wind. Or wind less than 12 knots (12 kms per hour)
No more than 250 metres (840 ft) offshore

Pre-requisites

Swim 50 metres (164 ft), without stopping
ASI Stand Up Paddle (Enclosed Flat Water) skill and knowledge

Learning Outcomes

Environment & Safety

  • Identify surface water movement and current direction
  • Identify wind direction and strength
  • Identify SUP hazards
  • Choose a safe SUP exposed waters location
  • Identify self rescue techniques and when to apply them
  • Apply SUP etiquette at exposed waters locations

Paddle Skills

  • Identify safe entry and exit points
  • Techniques to negotiate shore-breaks up to 1½ ft
  • Identify paddling technique and stance used in choppy waters
  • Fall and retrieve techniques in uneven waters and wind
  • Techniques to negotiate swell

        Demonstrate turns in exposed waters:

  • Back paddling (right & left side)
  • Sweep stroke
  • Step back pivot turn (heel side & toe side) 

        Identify how to perform:

  • Kahi stroke & Reverse kahi stroke

Equipment & Clothing

  • Selection of suitable board and equipment

Norminal Duration

Approx. 10-20 hours
to gain the above skills and knowledge

 

ASI SUP Wise Course Formats

Fun and practical hands on course, comes with all equipment provided, your own ASI logbook with reference information and SUP paddling log pages and a Certificate of Participation at completion.

SUP Wise-Starter

Introduction  session.  Experience stand up paddling in exposed waters.  2 hours

SUP Wise-Improver

Learn basic exposed waters paddle techniques, and gain more confidence to paddle in uneven waters.  3 sessions (1- 2 hrs each session)   

SUP Wise-Cruiser

Paddle confidently with correct technique and safety, negotiate swells, understand SUP location hazards. Gain your SUP Participation certificate. 5-10 sessions (1- 2 hrs each session)
