SUP Wise Level 4 SUP Intermediate Surf

Overview

ASI Level 4 Intermediate Surf is the fourth level of stand up paddle surf knowledge and skills.   Learn how to control the board and use the paddle to perform and link intermediate SUP surf manoeuvres in 3-4ft surf. 

You should already be a competent paddler at the Beginner SUP surf level and have extensive surf and ocean experience before venturing into these surf locations.  SUP Surfing requires high technical skills and surf knowledge. Learners should be accompanied with experienced SUP instructors at all times.

Aim

Demonstrate ability to control the board and use the paddle to perform and link intermediate SUP surf manoeuvres in 3 to 4ft surf.

Locations and Conditions 

  • Peeling waves 3ft - 4ft in height (1 metre)
  • Wind speed less than 12.5 knots
  • Offshore winds up to 10 knots
  • Free from hazards

Pre-requisites

Swim 50 metres (164 ft), without stopping
ASI Stand Up Paddle (Beginner Surf) skill and knowledge

Topics/ Outcomes 

Environment & Safety

  • Identify SUP surf hazards and self rescue techniques at the intermediate level
  • Choose a safe SUP surf location
  • Demonstrate correct wipe-out and mount/dismount
  • Demonstrate correct SUP etiquette

  • Choose suitable SUP surfing board and equipment


Paddle Skills

  • Choose a suitable place for entering and exiting the water 
  • Identify and use rips and channels
  • Negotiate broken and unbroken waves  
  • Identify correct paddling out protocol
  • Choose the correct waves to ride
  • Identify the correct take off position
  • Correctly ride the wave by understanding how body weight and speed affect SUP surfing
  • Understand how correct use of the paddle enhances ability to perform manoeuvres
  • Identify how to turn your board
  • Identify methods to get off the wave
  • How to wipe out safely at the intermediate level


Perform intermediate SUP surf manouevres:

  • Fade
  • Stall
  • Bottom turn
  • Top turn
  • Cutback
  • Link and perform manoeuvres on backhand and forehand, with correct use of paddle

Duration 

10 sessions (2 hrs each session) + practice
