ASI SUP Instructor Renewal FAQ's

Why Do I Have to Renew My Instructor Qualifications? 

You are a professional and this demonstrates you are keeping your skills and knowledge updated. 

You don’t need to attend another course.  Complete the online renewal form and submit relevant evidence. 
 


How Often Do I Have to Renew my SUP Instructor Certificate / Accreditation?

Your SUP Instructor accreditation certificate expires at least 12 months from the date of the training - to the nearest renewal date for the region.   

  • Australia, Asia - 31 December
  • UK, Europe, Middle East, USA, America's - 30 June  

In your first year, you may be given more than 12 months to renew (but you will receive at least a minimum of 12 months).

Each year after that, your accreditation certificate will be renewable each 12 months. 
  


How Do I Renew my SUP Instructor Accreditation Certificate?

You login into your member account on the ASI website at:   www.academyofsurfing.com/login
Choose the Member Login tab.

Complete the online renewal form.  Update your contact details.  Upload your rescue and or first aid certificate/s.  (or email them separately to us).  Pay the renewal fee.  
You can use the one renewal form if you want to renew multiple ASI instructor accreditation certificates. 
 


Do I Have to Pay Membership Fees, When I Renew my Instructor Accreditation Certificate?

No, the ASI instructor renewal fee is inclusive of membership.  Which means the ASI renewal fee is the best value in the marketplace. 
 


Do I Have To Provide a Current Rescue Certificate to Renew My Instructor Certification?

  • Level 1, Level 2 SUP Instructors.  No, you do not need to provide a current rescue certificate to renew your SUP Instructor Level 1 or Level 2. 
    It is recommended you update your water rescue certificate by attending a workshop.  Some land managers (city, councils, trusts, etc) require instructors to hold current rescue certificates at all times.  If your SUP school owner holds a permit, they will be able to advise you. 
    If you have a current rescue certificate, you can include it in your renewal form. 
     
  • Level 3 Surf and Downwind ,and above SUP Instructors.  You must hold a current "surf" rescue certificate and submit it to renew these accreditation certificates.

Do I Have to Provide a Current First Aid Certificate to Renew My Instructor Accreditation Certificate?

Yes, you must hold a current "first aid: certificate and submit it to renew your surfing instructor accreditation certificate.

What happens if my First Aid Certificate has Expired When My Renewal is Due.  Can I Still Renew?

Yes.  You can still complete the renewal form and payment so you do not incur the expired certificate fee.   You will have 12 months to provide your new first aid certificate.  Your new SUP Instructor certificate will not be issued until we receive your First Aid Certificate.   
You should not be working whilst your SUP Instructor certificate is expired.
Also note: that your SUP Instructor certificate will be dated 12 months from the date of your last expiry.    
 


Can I complete the online renewal form without holding a current first aid  (and water rescue) certificate?

Yes, you can still renew.  If you renew in time, you do not have to pay the renewal fee.  However, your instructor certificate will not be issued until we receive your current first aid (and/or rescue) certificates. 
 


How do I Provide Evidence of Completing Instructor Work Hours?

On the renewal form you write the name of the school and location you completed the hours, how many hours and approximately time and months.   ASI will verify this with your employer school. 
 


Can I Complete My Work Hours at a Non ASI School?

Yes.   
However, at all times, you must be abiding by ASI procedures.
 


What Happens if I Have Not Completed 25 Hours Work During the Past Year?

You cannot renew your SUP instructor qualification.   You can still complete the renewal form and payment so you do not incur the expired certificate fee.  Make sure you complete the 25 hours work. 
You should not be working whilst your SUP Instructor certificate is expired.
Also note: that your SUP Instructor certificate will be dated 12 months from the date of your last expiry.    
 


Do I Have to do 25 Hours Paid Work During the Past Year?

No.  you can complete work as a volunteer at a club or similiar. 
 


Can I Renew my SUP Instructor Certificate if I Missed the Expiry Date?

Yes.  you will pay an expired certificate fee. 
 


Can I Renew my SUP Instructor Certificate if it is Expired by Over a Year?

Yes.  You will pay an expired certificate fee plus the a fee for the year you missed. 
 


Can I Renew my SUP Instructor Certificate if Expiry is More Than 2 Years Old?

Depends.  If you have been active in the industry, you can renew.  You will pay the expired certificate fee plus a penalty.

If you completed your training prior to 2016, you will have to resit the course/s again.  (as ASI courses have been updated considerably).
 


I Hold Multiple ASI Qualifications.  Do I Have to Pay a Fee for Each Qualification?

No.  You only pay one fee for all your instructor qualifications. 
 


How Do I Renew if I am Working in Another Country ?

The ASI renewal fee is in one currency - Australian Dollars.  So it does not matter which country you are in. It will be the same fee worldwide. 

Your renewal /expiry date will be the same date as the date on your initial certificate.
