Getting Out of Rips/Current

Posted date: 29-October-2020

Any person surfing or swimming in the ocean should be aware of rips and currents and their potential dangers. Rips can carry you out to sea. Some rips may only take you a little way out but others may take you out a long way.

Rips can require a lot of paddling and this can tire you out to the point of not being able to keep yourself afloat. A major problem is that if you get caught in a rip you may panic and try to paddle directly against it – furthering tiring yourself.

• If you get caught in a rip, STAY CALM.

• You can PADDLE ACROSS THE RIP in order to get out of it.

• DO NOT PADDLE AGAINST, or into, the rip as you will tire yourself.
