Course Information


Overview:

ASI created this SUP sport specific water safety rescue award specifically for stand up paddle instructors and anyone who paddles regularly.


Aim:

Perform simple rescues in SUP enclosed flat water and exposed waters locations.

The workshop delivery option is an intensive course, with the ability to interact with the trainer and the group.  


Workshop
Duration:  half day (5 hours)
Plus:  submit current first aid certificate.
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.

Proficiency Workshop
For people who have previously completed the rescue course, within the last 12 months. 
Available in Australia only. 
Duration:  3 hours.  Attend practical only. 
Plus:  submit current first aid certificate.
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.
Enrolment:  Find workshop dates, locations, course fees  Use the same workshop enrolment course form.  Add into the notes section on enrolment - you want to do the proficiency course.  


Locations:

Qualified to conducted rescues at:  

  • Enclosed flat waters including rivers, creeks and lagoons, or
  • Coastal locations and inland bodies of water and harbours over 1 km (0.6 miles wide)  No breaking waves.

Topics Covered:

    • Identify emergency situations
    • Respond to emergency situations
    • Apply SUP rescue techniques
    • Demonstrate simulated in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients
    • Identify the signs of potential spinal injuries and respond and treat accordingly
    • Emergency signals and incident reporting

Entry Requirements:

Before starting this course, you must have:

  • Be medically and physically fit.
     
  • Able to swim a minimum of 100 metres (328 ft) with crawl stroke or breast-stroke, run 200 metres (650 ft), prone paddle 200 metres (650ft) on a stand up paddle board within 10 minutes
     
  • English speaking skills equivalent to IELTS 6 (Competent user: Generally you have an effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies, inappropriate usage and misunderstandings. You can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.)

    Note: proficiency workshop available in Australia only. Attend practical - completing mission and in-water rescues.
     
  • Submit current first aid certificate 

Course Requirements:

To gain your Stand Up Paddle Water Safety Rescue qualification, you will need to:

Read training manuals 
Paperbased manuals provided at workshop.  

At the Workshop: 

  • complete timed SUP mission within 10 minutes.  
    -swim 100 metres (328 ft) using front crawl or breast-stroke
    -run 200 metres (650 ft)
    -prone paddle 200 metres  (650ft) on a stand up paddle board, using crawl paddle stroke
  • demonstrate in-water rescues
  • complete multi-choice test

Demonstrating competency:
If you are not able to demonstrate competent rescue or mission test skills or cannot complete the mission test within 10- minutes time frame, at the workshop, you can practice and submit additional evidence.  Fees apply.  See FAQs.  

Before or After the Workshop: 

Submit Senior First Aid certificate
OR Lifesaving (UK only Combined Rescue & First Aid certificate).

Senior First Aid:  
The certificate date must not be expired.  Certificates that are more than 3 years old are not accepted.  Find Description and Approved Senior First Aid Training Providers

Equipment:

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:

  • Flat water stand up paddle board
  • Paddle
  • Coiled leash (leg-rope)
  • SUP clothing suitable for paddling and suitable for immersion in water when performing rescues

Renewal:

The Certificate is valid for 24 months (or 12 months in Australia) from the date you completed the workshop.

There is no renewal on this qualification.  

To obtain a new certificate, participants complete the course again.
