Overview:

ASI created this SUP sport specific water safety rescue award specifically for stand up paddle instructors.


Aim:

Perform simple rescues in the ocean in breaking waves of 1 ½ feet (½ metre).


Locations:

Locations defined as: ocean in breaking waves of 1 ½ feet ( ½ metre).


Career Outcomes:

    Water safety and rescue roles for Stand Up Paddle Instructors.


Topics Covered:

    • Identify emergency situations
    • Respond to emergency situations
    • Apply SUP rescue techniques
    • Demonstrate simulated in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients, whilst negotiating the surf zone to shore.
    • Identify the signs of potential spinal injuries and respond and treat accordingly
    • Emergency signals and incident reporting

Entry Requirements:

  • be medically and physically fit
  • have surf and ocean awareness and knowledge
  • able to swim a minimum of 200 metres (650 ft) in open water, run 200 metres (650 ft) , prone paddle 200 metres (650 ft) on stand up paddle board, in the ocean, within 10 minutes

Delivery Options:

The ASI SUP Water Safety Rescue (Surf) course can be completed by:

  • Attending a workshop (full workshop)
  • Attending a workshop (proficiency). Australia only. 

Course Requirements:

Delivery Option - Workshop:

This intensive 5 hour workshop is ideal for people who are comfortable in the ocean and can swim 200 metres without stopping and prone paddle effectively.

Workshop course requirements:
To gain your SUP Water Safety Rescue (Surf) qualification, you will need to:

At workshop:

  • complete timed SUP mission: 200 metre swim, 200 metre run, 200 metre prone paddle on SUP board, without stopping, within 10 minutes
  • demonstrate in-water rescues
  • complete multi-choice test

Before or after the workshop, provide copies of:

Workshop: 5 hours
You have 12 months from date of workshop to complete all course requirements.


Delivery Option - Proficiency:

Australia only.  This is for people who have previously completed the ASI SUP Safety Rescue Award within the previous 12 months.

Equipment:

The following equipment and clothing is required to complete the training:

  • Flat water or SUP surf stand up paddle board
  • Paddle
  • Long leash (leg-rope)
  • SUP clothing suitable for conducting rescues

Renewal:

The Certificate is valid for 24 months (or 12 months in Australia) from the date you completed the workshop.

There is no renewal on this qualification.  

To obtain a new certificate, participants complete the course again.
