Instructors Gain ASI SUP Qualifications in Bali, August 2017

Congratulations to the new ASI instructors who completed their SUP Water Rescue Safety Award and SUP Level 1 & 2 courses on 20-24 August 2017 in Bali, Indonesia.

The courses were delivered by ASI SUP Trainer Matt Worley who flew in from Australia. Matt is elite level in both Stand up paddling and surfing, and an experienced SUP School operator and instructor. He is also an experienced SUP Yoga teacher.

The SUP Instructor Water Rescue workshop covered key rescue skills specific for SUP instructors. It provides Instructors with skills and knowledge to perform simple rescues in SUP enclosed flatwater locations.

The instructors learned about emergency situations and responding to emergency situations, SUP rescue techniques, simulated in-water rescues on conscious and unconscious patients, identifying the signs of spinal injuries, Emergency signals, and incident reporting.

The new instructors then went on to complete the ASI SUP Wise course and methodology, covering paddling techniques, safety, and awareness.

The Level 1 and Level 2 SUP Instructor courses, where the instructors learned how to create lesson plans, deliver lessons, safety, and risk management techniques, how to look after clients, in flat water before progressing to the exposed water location for level 2.

ASI Trainer Matt Worley said: “We began the rescue training at Pantai Mertassari beach at Sanur. The temperature in Bali was hot and humid with light onshore winds. There were a few hazards, so we moved to a sheltered lagoon for day 2. The instructors were all very competent paddlers and their rescues drills were excellent. “

The participants, all of which rated the course 5 out of 5 said: “It was a fantastic course, I was a little nervous at first but Matt helped us relax and I really enjoyed learning. I really appreciated Matt and we covered so much.”

The courses were held in Seminyak with the practical water sessions held at Sanur. Sanur is on the south-eastern side of Bali and is one of Bali’s best SUP spots, offering a large range of paddling locations and conditions.

Further courses will be scheduled in Bali in the new year.
