Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to learn?
Enrol into the beginners surfing program with an ASI accredited surf school. This includes 5 to 10 lessons and the ASI Learn to surf manuals and use of a surfboard. There’s a lot to learn so its important to have a good understanding of not only the skills you need but also information about the surf environment and your equipment.

Can I learn to surf in one lesson?
No. But you will have great fun and you will probably stand up and ride the wave for a little bit. One lesson is a good way to “experience” surfing.

Are group lessons or private lessons best?
Group lessons are a good way to meet new people and practice your skills. Private lessons with an accredited surfing instructor will really fast track your surfing ability. You may like to mix and match between group and private lessons.

Can I learn to surf from a book or DVD?
Learning to surf is a combination of knowledge and skill. If you don’t have the right knowledge then you never get the skill to surf. We have seen people trying to surf for months and by changing one small thing, they are suddenly able to catch lots of waves. And they could have found this information in ASI Learn to surf manuals & DVDs.

Are surf camps and surf trips worthwhile for learning?
Yes. Surf camps and surf trips are great ways to learn and increase your surfing skill. You get to experience new waves at different locations. Surfers have always travelled, in search of that perfect wave and the adventure of new locations and new friends.
