ASI Surfing Instructor Course Pathways


ASI Instructors are trained to the highest standard in the world.  

They are experienced surfers who are interested in the stoke of surfing and passing that stoke and knowledge onto others.

ASI Instructors are trained in:

  • Teaching /assessment:  instructional methods for outdoors and water environs
  • Safety:  client safety management as well as holding surf rescue and first aid qualifications
  • Environment:  care for the environment and seek to minimise social and natural impact on beaches and in the surf
  • Professional development:  annual renewal ensures ASI instructors skills and knowledge are up-to-date and current.




Level 1 Surfing Instructor


This is the entry level qualification to work as a surfing instructor.  

  • Instruct beginner to intermediate surfing level.
  • Instructors have a minimum of intermediate level surfing skill and knowledge

Level 2 Surfing Coach


  • Instruct beginner to advanced surfing skill and knowledge.
  • Coaches have advanced level surfing skill and knowledge and 3 years continuous surfing instruction experience.

  • instruct beginner to elite-advanced surfing skill and knowledge.
  • Coaches have elite advanced surfing skill and knowledge and 5 years continuous surfing instruction experience.

Level 4 Master Surfing Coach


  • Instruct beginner to elite-advanced surfing skill and knowledge and coach competition skills.
  • Coaches have elite-advanced surfing skill and knowledge, 10 years continuous surfing instruction experience as well as competition coaching expertise.
