Aim
Demonstrate ability to control the surfboard and link intermediate level surfing manoeuvres.

Conditions
Peeling (unbroken) waves of 3 feet (1 metre). Short or long board.

Prerequisite
Have the skills and knowledge at the ASI beginner surfer level

Level 4
- Interpret weather, swell, tides, wind direction and speed information to work out surf conditions
- Select a surfing location for the intermediate surfer
- How surfers use rips to their advantage
- Techniques to negotiate broken and unbroken waves including the duck dive
- How to exiting water at different types of surf breaks
- Choose suitable waves to ride
- Identify the take-off position
- Techniques for turning
- Methods to get off the wav
Surfing Manoeuvres
- Trim on forehand and backhand
- Top turn (forehand)
- Bottom turn (with spray, forehand)

Level 5
- Identify how parts of your board affect performance
- Identify the different types of fins and fin systems
- Identify surfboard damage
- Choose a surfboard for the intermediate surfer based on personal style and the surfing conditions
- Identify surfing safety and assistance clothing

- Top and bottom turn (backhand)
- Cut-back (forehand)
- Re-entry (forehand)
- Linking manoeuvres

Level 6
- Experience surfing at a beach break
- Experience surfing at a reef break
- Experience surfing at a point break
- Experience surfing at a river mouth

Qualification
ASI Intermediate Surfer Achievement Certificate for each level
OR
Australian Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) Statement of Attainment (completion of all levels 4 to 6)
