Beginner Surfer

Aim

Trim along on broken or peeling waves up to 1 ½ feet (½ metre).


Conditions

White water or peeling waves up to 1½ feet (½ metre).
Sandy beach, with even gradient, free from rocks and rips/sweeps, wind less than 20 kph, water depth of chest deep or less.


Prerequisite

Swim 200 metres.


Level 2

  • Identify the types of waves suitable for surfing
  • Identify surfing hazards
  • Equipment and clothing for beginner level
  • Choose a safe surfing location
  • Identify suitable weather conditions for surfing
  • Choose a safe place to enter the water
  • Negotiate small waves using a variety of techniques
  • Paddle the board in trim
  • Turn the surfboard in a sitting position
  • Wipe-out and dismount safely
  • Demonstrate correct stance
  • Apply surf safety when selecting waves to catch
  • Catch and ride a wave

Level 3

  • Angling
  • Trimming
  • Turning
  • Surfing etiquette - drop in rule, snaking

Qualification

ASI Beginner Surfer Achievement Certificate for level 2 or 3

OR

Australian Nationally Recognised Training (NRT)  Statement of Attainment.  (On completion of all levels 2 to 3)
