Level 3 SUP Downwind
Downwind paddling is characterised by the rider using the wind to their advantage and enjoyment on special downwind SUP boards ranging from 12'ft 6" with the more effective boards being 14ft and longer. Conducted in coastal waters or large inland bodies of water, participants generally travel average distances of 4 to 25 kms or more with a minimum wind speed of 10 knots and up to 500 metres from the coast.
It’s the ultimate in endurance - you against the elements, but there is also a great deal of strategy involved. Careful planning of routes, assessing the conditions for wind strength, direction and tides to ensure you stay on track. Maintaining board momentum by maximising peaks and troughs in the swell, utilising power up and power down stroke techniques whilst watching the kilometres go by and taking in the changing coastal scenery. You SUP board is your companion, and lifeline. Having the right board for the downwind conditions is essential.
