Paddle effectively and safely in exposed water environments (beaches, bays, harbours), in the presence of a singular shore break no more than 1 ½ feet, swell size up to 2ft and minimal wind chop.
Conditions
Coastal beaches and bays and harbours
A singular shore break up to 1.5ft and the absence of a series / procession of significant incoming breaking waves beyond (surf).
Long interval swell up to 2 ft beyond shore break
Minimal surface (wind) chop
Wind speed less than 12 knots, offshore winds less than 10 knots
Understand the basic variance of shoreline topography, tides and tidal flow
Identify SUP hazards associated with exposed waters
Identify the effects of wind with regards to SUP participation
Select a safe location for participation
Identify safe entry and exit points
Negotiate shore-break of up to 1.5 ft
Identify paddling technique and stance used in choppy waters
Demonstrate paddle steering techniques: Passive strokes: Kahi stroke (bow rudder stroke), Reverse kahi stroke (reverse bow rudder stroke), Bracing stroke - left and right Active strokes: Power steering, C stroke
Fall and retrieve techniques in uneven waters + wind Self rescue techniques (paddling prone or kneeling)
Selection of suitable board and equipment
