Aim

Instruct and manage stand up paddle surfing sessions in surf up to 1½ ft (½ metre).

Career outcomes

Stand up paddle instructor within the stand up paddle or outdoor recreation industry.

Topics covered

Identify beginner SUP surf risks and dangers that affect students
Create risk management strategies to manage risks and dangers in beginner SUP surf locations
Identify laws and regulations applicable to the SUP surf location
Identify emergency processes and responses for SUP surf locations
Identify communication skills in the SUP surf environment
Identify suitable SUP surf equipment for students
Develop lesson plans for instructing SUP surf beginner sessions
Demonstrate and instruct a variety of SUP surf paddling techniques
Identify how to manage groups of students safely in SUP surf locations

Entry requirements

Before enrolling, you must have:

a minimum of SUP surf intermediate skill and knowledge
ASI Level 2 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Exposed Waters) certificate

Minimum of 12 months membership

Course requirements

1) Complete Assessment Record Book and return to ASI for assessment

demonstrate ability to paddle safely and effectively in intermediate SUP surf locations: negotiate 3ft surf at a beach break and paddle safely and correctly, perform bottom turn (forehand & backhand), perform cutback (forehand & backhand), link manoeuvres, demonstrate correct safety, wipe-out and SUP etiquette.

2) Complete 25 hours practical experience with an ASI accredited or approved SUP school and have your Record Book log signed by SUP school owner OR have SUP Trainer sign your Record Book log stating you have the required competency.

Additional certification required

Provide copy of your:

current surf rescue certificate
senior first aid certificate.

You can complete these after enrolling but must be completed to obtain your ASI qualification. Find Rescue & First Aid Training Providers.

Qualification

ASI Level 3 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Beginner Surf)

and (as applicable) Australian Nationally Recognised Training (NRT) Statement of Attainment in Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation (SIS30301).
