Aim

Take your students to the next level by providing downwind instruction sessions.  You could specialise in private coaching, manage groups including use of support craft or hold regular weekly paddling sessions for your students.

This ASI instructors course provides you with all the skills and knowledge to effectively teach downwind paddling  in distances up to 10 km  in open water coastal or inland locations.  

Downwind locations for this instructors level are defined as wide open stretches of water such as exposed coastal waters and protected bays, lakes, lagoons. Swell size up to 4 ft, wind behind and speed greater than 15 knots and  less than 20 knots, no more than 500 metres from shore.

  • Stand up paddle instructor within the stand up paddle or outdoor recreation industry.
  • Industry job roles that require SUP knowledge (e.g. sales rep, retail).

Topics covered

You will gain the skills and knowledge to:

  • Plan and organise logistics for instructing  downwind paddling sessions
  • Identify downwind SUP risks and dangers that affect students
  • Create risk management strategies to manage risks and dangers in downwind paddling locations
  • Identify downwind SUP emergency processes and responses
  • Identify suitable downwind SUP equipment, equipment, clothing and hydration requirements for students
  • Develop lesson plans for instructing downwind paddling sessions
  • Demonstrate and instruct a variety of downwind paddling techniques
  • Identify how to manage students safely including use of support craft

      Level 3 SUP Instructor (Downwind) Training Manual
      Level 3 Assessment and Competency Record Book
      Learn to Downwind Paddle Techniques Manual
      Minimum of 12 months membership


      Additional certification required

      Provide copy of your:

      • current flat water or surf rescue certificate
      • senior first aid certificate. 

        You can complete these after enrolling but must be completed to obtain your ASI qualification.  Find Rescue & First Aid Training Providers.   


      Qualification

      ASI Level 3 Stand Up Paddle Instructor (Downwind)

      and (as applicable)  Australian Nationally Recognised Training (NRT)  Statement of Attainment in Certificate III in Outdoor Recreation (SIS30310).
