Learn to surf and have surf lessons at the Black Dog Surfing Surf School, an ASI accredited surf school, located at Byron Bay.

Dean Johnston owns Black Dog Surfing surf school. He's been surfing since he was 3 years old and started competing on the Junior surfing circuit when he was 7. He was sponsored by Billabong and Aloha and travelled around Australia and overseas competing until he was 15 years of age.

Dean studied tourism so that he could work overseas whilst chasing the waves. He holds a Diploma in Tourism and has worked extensively in the tourism industry working in hotels including providing surfing lessons to guests. Dean is also an accredited surfing instructor, holds his surf rescue, advanced resuscitation and senior first aid qualifications.

Dean started Black Dog Surfing in 1992 and is assisted by a team of highly qualified surfing instructors.

The Black Dog Surfing guarantee guarantees you standing in your first lesson. They are able to do this as they scout out the best waves and safest surfing beach on the day. There is a limit of 5 people to one instructor in group surfing lessons so you get lots of personalised attention. And then add to this, Dean’s specially developed instruction technique and you are up and riding in no time.

Black Dog Surfing surf school offers group and private surfing lessons, from the beginner to advanced surfer, surfing guide trips, team building, beginner and intermediate surfing certificate courses, surfing awareness, board hire for kids, adults, family groups, parties, school groups and corporates. A photographer is at all lessons, capturing those special moments and photos are available for purchase.

Surfer Chick - womens lessons and kids Saturday and school holiday surf classes are also available. Surfing trips from Sydney up to Noosa can also be organised.
