How to Back Door a Front Side Barrel

Posted: 13 June 2019

HELP

Some waves are too steep to take off on the peak, this requires the surfer to take off on the other side of the peak (ie back door) and quickly pull in under the lip. Get this wrong at it usually ends in a lip launch.

This is an advanced technique and requires commitment, quick jump up, precision timing and adjustments.

• Paddle as quickly as possible, quickly jump up to your feet, position them a little more forward than a normal take off.

• Don’t’ do a full bottom turn, instead put your hand in the face of the wave and lean towards the face and aim the leading shoulder down the line to help turn quicker.

• tuck under the lip for a small barrel or stand tall for a large barrel.

• Make minor adjustments of your feet, aim your board at the exit of the tube by steering with the front foot

• Assess whether it is going to be a quick/long /slow /fast tube and make adjustments If you are going:

TO SLOW – work the board up and down the face in small increments to generate more speed
TOO FAST – put weight on the back foot inducing a stall and slowing you down
CORRECT SPEED - Move your weight and feet over middle of the board.

Enjoy the ride!
