THE STORIES OF BONDI BEACH.   Check out these 2 epic books "Scum Valley" and "A Bondi Story" written by local Bondi boy, Matthew Ellks, (Ellksy)  that bring to life the surfing scene in Bondi Beach, Australia from the 1970's, 80's, 90's

Back in the day Bondi Beach was nicknamed "Scum Valley". Partly from the storm water drain that flowed into the surf and the occassional overflow of raw sewage from the nearby sewage works.   (now no longer there)  And partly because of the cheap rents and rundown apartment blocks.   (now expensive !)

The books are fictional but those in the know, will tell you, it's not too far from the actual events, with a few enhancements.   Of course, the names have been changed to protect the innocent .... or the guilty !   

SCUM VALLEY.  This book is about the local community of Bondi Beach before the cafe culture took over. It follows the local boardriders through a period of decadence and high times as it began losing its heritage to a relentless stream of yuppies. The story has a David and Goliath twist to it as a rich kid waltzes into town, sets up a surf shop and begins winning friends and influencing people. A staunch local named Dan has a run in with him and eventually opens a rival surf shop in direct competition with the corporate kid. And so starts a feud that divides the community and sets the scene for ongoing battles that are fought in the streets and in the water.

A BONDI STORY.   Bondi Story is the sequel to Scum Valley. It continues to follow the board riders through the many challenges they faced to achieve their goal of becoming the premier board riders club in Bondi. After starting on the right foot the Bondi Board Riders saw the registration of their club swell to well over a hundred eager, but determined, grommets. This book details how they managed to improve through dedication and commitment. Their founder and leader, Dan, with the help of his tight mate and pro surfer, Steele, inspire these often forgotten kids to believe in themselves. They help them find the confidence needed to thirst and aim towards their surfing goals as well as focus on their lives in general. The book follows the young board riders to Hawaii. There they not only conquer the legendary waves of the North Shore, but gain the confidence to return home and set their sights on conquering Bondi by taking the Premier’s title from their rival, the star studded club ‘Rude Boys Surfing’.
